1. Pandit Birju Maharaj:
Pandit Birju Maharaj was a colonizer of Lucknow Gharana. He is known for his effortless grace, storytelling finesse & rhythmic mastery. He took Kathak to an international level. His performance and choreographies were in films like Devdas and Dedh Ishqiya made convenient to modern audiences. His legacy countlessly inspires worldwide Kathak dancers.
2.Sitara Devi:
Sitara Devi was known for energy & expressions.She brought the dance to the cinemas and international stages in the 20th century. Her powerful presence and bold style made her the icon for women empowerment.
She was also known as ‘Empress of Kathak’.
3. Shovana Narayan:
A follower of Pandit Birju Maharaj, Shovana Narayan was known for combining classical dance with contemporary themes. She was a scholar and addresses social & philosophical issues by Kathak. She was honoured with Padma Shri award & maintained her status as global ambassador of the art form.
4. Kumudini Lakhia:
Kumudini Lakhia updated Kathak by adding group choreography and gave a break to traditional solo format. She was founder of Kadamb Centre of Ahmedabad, she guided generations of Kathak dancers.
She was honoured with Padma Bhushan.
5.Pandit Shambhu Maharaj:
Pandit Shambhu Maharaj was a great pillar for Lucknow Gharana. He is known for his great abhinaya & delicate grace. He was expert in bringing subtle emotions to life through expressions which help to earn immense respect.He trained many people like Birju Maharaj and he influenced the lyrical style of modern Kathak.
6. Pandit Lachhu Maharaj:
Lachhu Maharaj was the elder brother of Shambu Maharaj. He gave an impact on Kathak through his choreography. He brought classical Kathak to Indian cinema through films like Mahal & Mughal-e-Azam. He was known for adding devotional and romantic elements into his work and made Kathak
look emotionally rich.
